And the Mountains Echoed -Khaled Hosseini

And the Mountains EchoedAnd the Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Having read two of his books in the past, I thought I knew what to expect with this one but I was taken by surprise. This is in my opinion the best book of Khaled Hosseini that I have read, his masterpiece.
I found reading from the various perspectives and timelines very pleasant. Khaled has a way with words that I wish I had. His characters are humane, with flaws, that feels relatable. They are often riddled with guilt. “The kite runner” and “A thousand splendid suns” were bittersweet till the very end, this one too didn’t disappoint. While reading I had to keep reminding myself that this is a work of fiction.
Not everything makes sense in life, not everything is completed and Khaled beautifully and very subtly reminds us of that by leaving some puzzles of the stories unfolded, untold and unknown. This is a story or rather a collection of intertwined stories that left me with tears welled up in the eyes and wanting for more.

I do not think Khaled wanted us to judge his characters, I think he purposefully bared to us their guilt, their flaws and their deep regrets. I believe compassion is what he expected from the readers. No one in this story is perfect and for me that is the beauty of it. This is simply the best work of fiction I have read in 2018 so far.
